20th Century Philosophy
The Century that Changed the World
Welcome to the Century that changed the World.
“We see unmistakably the sort of universe in which we have all along been living, and must come to terms with it. If we had foolish un-Christian hopes about human culture, they are now shattered. If we thought we were building up a heaven on earth, if we looked for something that would turn the present world from a place of pilgrimage into a permanent city satisfying the soul of man, we are disillusioned, and not a moment too soon.”
- C.S. Lewis, "Learning in War-Time," in The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses, pg. 53-54
This course embarks on a journey through 20th century thought. As we explore together in class the major events of the century and the philosophies that inspired them, we ask the question: “what does it mean to be a human?” Students will be assigned weekly readings, narration, and notebooking. Class time will focus on understanding the broader context of the assigned reading and discussion of the ideas presented in the work. Additional assignments could include projects, essays, and current events.
Students should plan for approximately 1 hour of work at home each week.
Students are expected to come to class prepared from their week's assigned reading. They should be ready to participate in a deeper discussion.
